Book Excerpt

“You did an A-plus bad cop at the bakery, Kaminski.” 

A small dimple appeared on her right cheek as Erin smiled. He hadn’t noticed it when looking at her face-to-face. Would the other side of her profile show a matching one?

He kind of hoped so. “That wasn’t my bad cop,” she said. 

He chuckled and turned his gaze back to the road. “Are you telling me you went easy on him then?” 

“Why would I do that?” she asked. The snow on the trees they passed clung to the branches in cotton candy-shaped clumps. 

“I don’t know. Do you actually think Rob or Josh and Nikki killed Laney?” 

“It doesn’t matter.” Her voice was breathy, as though she’d almost whispered the words. “They’re suspects. They have motive, and once the coroner gets the body, we’ll be able to determine if they had the opportunity.” 

Perry didn’t offer a rebuttal because she was right. 

“But…” She hesitated. “I don’t want to think they did it. I like them, and they’ve all overcome so much. It would be hard to find out that they let bitterness and hatred drive them to murder. Good people make bad decisions all the time, though.” 

“Bad decisions? That’s it?” Perry let his head fall back against the seat. “Is that what you called the things you saw on the street during your last job?” Some of his colleagues in offices across the country might not give Ohio a second thought, but Perry knew what the state’s law enforcement was up against. Namely, everything bad stemming from high drug addiction and human trafficking rates. 

“Bad decisions that lead to bad decisions that lead to even worse decisions maybe,” she said. “Bad decisions have a way of spreading, and they never affect only the person who made them.” 

Perry rolled his head to the left so he could see her. “That why you left for quieter pastures? Less people, less mistakes that can end up your problem?” 

She moved her head in a single shake and took the exit on their right. “No. You’ll just make fun of me if I tell you why I left.” 

He raised his hand to his chest and faked shocked offense. “I would never mock a colleague.” 

She glanced at him and then laughed. “And you call me snarky.”
