About the Book

Book: Immortal Abyss (Duology Book 2)

Author: Katherine Briggs

Genre: YA Fantasy

Release date: September 17, 2024

Seize the throne. Seek the legend and conquer the Abyss.

Nations rise and fall in the aftermath of war over the Eternity Gate. The corrupted desert throne stands empty, and the Immortal Abyss awakens. Drought ravages the continent, and people long for the rebirth of a starpalm, who will rise from among mortals and end their judgment.

Orphaned at birth, Tol grew up hiding in the farthest corners of the desert, training under powerful rebel fire wielders. She now dedicates her life to the Rebellion’s cause to seize the throne and Abyss from the surviving dynasty and deliver both to the coming deity.

Chosen as the Rebellion’s messenger, she travels to reach sympathizers capable of identifying the starpalm. Familiar figures haunt her dreams, and her path twists with every step she takes. Can Tol fulfill her purpose and summon a legend? Or will her country perish under the judgment of the twin gates?

More from Katherine

Hello friend!

Have you ever felt like no matter how hard you tried, you couldn’t overcome something difficult in your life? Maybe it was a bad habit you wanted to outgrow, a closed door you wished to open, or a choice you needed to make.

Within God’s will, Jesus in Matthew 19:26 says, “With God, all things are possible.” (ESV)

This is why I wrote The Immortal Abyss. Like you, I have felt stuck in my limitations and circumstances. My protagonist Tol, an orphan, strives to carve a new life for herself by joining a rebellion and bringing reform to her corrupted country. But how can she serve her cause if she can’t overcome her weakness in her fire gifting?

Like Tol, we can’t rise above challenges alone. So, what do we do?

  • Ask God for help and thank Him for promising to never abandon us.
  • Seek friends who will reciprocate spurring one another on to persevere.
  • Remain focused on our purpose.

If you’re looking for an adventure fantasy that will encourage you to never give up on what is good, please enjoy The Immortal Abyss, sequel to The Eternity Gate and conclusion to The Threshold Duology.

Cheers to journeying across forbidden lands, meeting new friends, taming dragons, and overcoming the impossible!

~ Katherine Briggs

Author Interview

1. Can you tell us a little bit about what readers can expect from your books?

Of course, and thank you for having me on the blog today, Randi.
Readers can expect The Immoral Abyss to take them on a high-stakes adventure through a new world. Even when things seem impossible, the Good is stronger. Even when we make mistakes, we can get back up again. There’s light in the darkest moments.

2. What is the greatest advice you have ever been given about writing?
A ballet teacher once told me, “The ones who make it are the ones who don’t give up.” I apply this to writing and just about everything else. Wonderful Christian fantasy author Lindsay A. Franklin also recently said, “It’s all about the long game.” Essentially, both women said the same thing. We can’t give up on things that are important to the Lord and the purposes He has given us.
If I can add my own words to theirs, I would also say that the definition of “making it” needs to be regularly reevaluated to make sure we’re staying on track with what’s important and lasting.

3. Can you share 5 random facts about this book?
This is such a fun question. I would love to share five random facts about The Immortal Abyss.
  1. Tol’s difficulty with controlling her gifting in fire was inspired by my younger sister’s hyper flexibility. As a professional ballet dancer, her flexibility is a huge asset, but in the past her muscles couldn’t always keep up, and it became a limiting factor and, at times, the source of injury. Watching her persevere over this was inspiring.
  2. The handful of climbing and bouldering sequences were inspired by my husband John’s and my journey into the world of indoor rock climbing.
  3. Milk tea, brewed with goat’s milk and green tea and grain, is a real-life contemporary drink enjoyed in Mongolia.
  4. There are a few plot twists and surprises in the book. One is pretty big, and I’d entertained the idea for months before casting it aside thinking, “No. It’s too much. I don’t know what readers would think, and I don’t know if I can pull it off.” While reading a very early draft of The Immortal Abyss, one of my alpha readers told me, “I feel like we need to go all out at this point in the book. I almost want _____.” And she said the exact same idea I was thinking. We talked the benefits and challenges over, and it became an integral part of the book. Hopefully the plot twist surprises and ultimately encourages you.
  5. After you finish the book, look up the Gates of Paradise, sculpted by Lorenzo Ghiberti. Bonus fun fact: I had the opportunity to see these beautiful doors while living overseas as a teenager with my family.
4. Can you share something interesting or surprising you learned while researching for the book?
While researching for this book, I learned that charcoal-colored sand really does exist. Usually, you find it along the beach, and I was able to touch black sand while visiting the big island of Hawai’i less than a year ago. Black sand is volcanic stone beaten down into grains. The sand of the beach I visited was larger and sharper than my usual experiences with sand, but still soft and comfortable to walk upon. Inspired by this, I decided to put a charcoal-colored desert into The Immortal Abyss.
5. What do you hope readers will take away from the book?
I hope The Immortal Abyss will remind readers that they and their actions matter. We cannot give up on the Good.

6. Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions. Before you go, where can readers keep up with what’s next?
Thank you so much for the interview opportunity, Randi! I appreciate it very much.
