Book Excerpt from A Journey

Flames ignited everything in order. “While this is burning, find yourself some small sticks and lay them on top, then bigger sticks. Then broken branches. Finally, if you want to cook on it, go to a small tree and cut off some skinny branches with your knife and peel the bark off of them. The green wood won’t be quick to burn. Lay several across the fire, criss-crossed, like a grid and put your pot of water or your pan of fish, or whatever on it. If we were by some small trees right now, you would notice that the smoke would filter through the leaves and branches and not go up like this column here does. Your fire won’t likely be seen because of smoke.” 

“Go on!” 

“Now, when you’re done with the fire in the morning, just use your shovel to push the dirt back into the holes and spread the leaves around. It’ll look like you were never there.”

 

“Thank you, Mr. Thompson. I will definitely use this skill on my trip. Is there anything I can do for you?” 

“Stay safe, young’n. If you will, just send me a card when you get to where you’re going. That’ll be thanks enough. Wish I could ride along with you, but I’m too old and tired.”

 

“That’s alright. You take care of yourself. Thanks again!” I unhitched Dakota and rode home to prepare for tomorrow’s departure.

About the Author

Of the many jobs she’s held in the past, including thirty-five years of designing and constructing stained glass windows part-time, teaching was one of the most enjoyable for Kathy J. Perry because investing in kids is so important. To this end, she continues to encourage good character with clean, moral stories kids and teens love to read. Good books make such an impact. Writing is hard work, but there’s nothing like a good story to run off with your imagination. When things are flowing, it’s like a vacation. Sometimes the best ideas come in the middle of the night. When not writing, you’ll find her painting with watercolor, doing school visits, writing a blog, interviewing other writers, designing websites, working as an administrative assistant part-time, and renovating houses. Is this retirement? Apparently so! She loves every minute of it with her husband of 43 years.
