Wow, this movie was--- so much more than I expected it to be. To be honest, prior to watching this movie, I didn't really know any specifics about this particular story. I'm sure I'd likely heard it talked about in passing... but I didn't have all the facts or anything like that. I expected the movie would focus much more on the court case, and while it certainly does that as well... it also went back much further than that, giving us a glimpse of Joe's childhood, time in the Marine Corps and his relationship with his wife... which to me, made this movie all that much better. It was interesting to learn not JUST about the case (in which Coach Joe Kennedy was fired for his own personal prayers, despite having never invited his athletes to pray with him), but about all the events in his life that led him to that point. It also served as a great message not just about religious freedoms (for all, and not just Christians), but also about how God can use absolutely anyone... even an Average Joe.
This movie was beautifully done, keeping me interested from start to finish and is certainly one worth checking out. Be inspired by the true story of Coach Joe Kennedy and his fight for freedom in the new movie, Average Joe, in theaters October 11!
