Just My Fake Husband by Deb Goodman: Book Review

**ARC received for consideration. All opinions are my own.

The Book

Gabriel Tate was Mr. Perfect…until one bad night got him totally cancelled.

He's the Tate family’s Golden Boy, and incredibly sexy to boot. I almost consider helping him when he begs for my public relations expertise to fix the repercussions of his actions.

It’s not my fault his own father fired him from the ginormous company he was set to take over. Besides, he and I have a bit of a past—something he doesn’t seem to remember anything about. Which is embarrassing.

I’m determined to keep my distance.

But then, Gabriel switches tactics. When he offers me money in exchange for becoming his fake wife so he can get back in his father’s good graces, I falter in my resolve. My sister's not safe until I can find the money to pay for her group home. She needs my help. I’m all she has.

So…slap a ring on me and call me desperate because now I’m suddenly the newest—and most temporary—Mrs. Tate.
It’s clear, though, that I must stave off these pesky feelings of wedded bliss when he proves to be noble and kind, and a huge fan of my sister, who has a disability.

Our pretend kisses and affections are becoming more than I can handle. I'm my sister's caretaker, so love can't happen for me. Don't my feelings understand I simply cannot fall in love?

Just My Fake Husband is a sweet, small-town, closed-door romantic comedy with all the sizzle and none of the spice! It deals with the past deaths of parents. However, River and Gabriel have plenty of excitement as they share a fancy cottage, an adorable dog, and, eventually, one single, solitary bed.

Deb Goodman’s obsession with the written word started at age three, when she realized the old-timey newsprint wallpaper in her family’s bathroom had actual words on it. The only problem? By the time she learned to read a couple of years later, the wallpaper had been replaced with something else—boring, non-worded wallpaper—and to this day, she still doesn’t know what it said.

Now, she and her husband and four children live in Utah. They love sports, music, and doing slightly insulting, pretend voices for their little shorkie, Mavis.

Deb writes funny, small-town romance that you won’t need to shield your kids’ eyes from. Writing lovey dovey books comes naturally to Deb since, to her, there’s nothing better than reading and writing about how two people fall in love.

Book Review

Just My Fake Husband is the fifth book in the Tate Brothers series. While familiar characters make appearances and you might have a better understanding of the Tate family dynamics if you've read the previous books in the series, I do think this one could be enjoyed just fine as a standalone as well.

This was such a fun read! From the previous books in the series, we know that Gabriel is the one brother who actually had a positive relationship with his dad... until one night of bad decisions threatened all that. I was drawn into the story right from the moment he storms into River's office begging for PR help to clean up his mess. The chemistry between these two was so good. While they may have entered a marriage of convenience, it didn't take long for very real feelings to take over and I adored every minute of it. River's role of caretaker to her sister added such a great element to this story and I thought was done very well with the balance of her feeling of wanting to do it herself and loving her sister immensely with the relief to have some of it taken off her shoulders too. Both were wonderfully written characters who you couldn't help but root for, and I loved seeing them grow throughout the story both in their relationship and individually.

Just My Fake Husband is a closed-door romance with kisses only.
