The Book
What happens when you put a newly single girl, her best friend's older brother, and a holiday road trip together? A Christmas romcom, obviously.
Dinah Forbes is in one of those messy transitional stages in life. Recently dumped? Check. Uncertain about her carrier path? Check. Still hung up on her childhood crush? Check. And because she's a glutton for punishment, when her best friend's older brother--Dinah's boss and said crush--faces some disappointment at work, she suggests that they drive home for Thanksgiving instead of fly. After all, what harm could a week of confined spaces and Christmas festivities do?
Dawson Davis is the nation's youngest governor, and while he's proud of all that he's accomplished, being the youngest person in the room hasn't exactly instilled a lot of faith from his fellow politicians. But he finally feels brave enough to do the thing he's been wanting to do since he got the job: propose a bill of his own. Only, it doesn't go as planned and the senator that he had hoped would propose the bill on his behalf isn't convinced that Dawson can weather the political storm this law will cause. Enter: Dinah's road trip idea.
While Dawson is hoping that the trip unlocks some new ideas and Dinah is praying that she finds some clarity about her future, like a true romcom, they get much more than they bargained for.
This book is the last in the Love On The Ballot series. This is a series of standalone romcoms written by different authors and all connected by a political thread. But despite the political theme, these books are not controversial or heavy in any way. They're fun, light, short reads that can be read in any order. Nothing Good Starts With Your Best Friend's Brother, like all of Rachel E. Scott’s books, is a clean read that has no gratuitous violence, sex, or vulgar language.
The Author
Rachel is the author of both contemporary and fantasy stories. She's a The Office
enthusiast, a The Lord of the Rings superfan, and a sucker for all things geek. She
reads anything with clean romance—bonus points if there's some snarky
MCs, funny side characters, and a happy ending. Rachel is dog obsessed, and two
of her series even include her dogs (Daisy Mae appears in A Tale of Ribbons &
Claws and Marshall is in Legends of Avalon). This hobbit author and her dogs
spend lots of time writing, walking, and of course, watching The Office and the appendices from The
Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.
Book Review
Nothing Good Starts with Your Best Friend's Brother is part of the Love on the Ballot series. This is a multi-author series, and all books can be enjoyed in any order or as standalones. This was another wonderful addition to the Love on the Ballot series. Best friend's brother is one of my favorite tropes and when you add in a holiday road trip? Yes, please! Dawson and Dinah were such wonderful characters. I loved seeing them working to make a difference throughout the story, making it easy for me to root for them to get their happily ever after. They had such a sweet and easy chemistry between them making their move from friends to more feel so natural. There was just the right amount of holiday cheer within the story too. It was a quick read, but one that I really enjoyed! If you love a good road trip romance, this is definitely one to check out.
Nothing Good Starts with Your Best Friend's Brother is a closed-door romance with kisses only and very minimal minor language.
