Nobody is ready for the mayhem and surprises that ensue when six of the worst youngsters disrupt the town's yearly Christmas performance.
Did you ever read The Best Christmas Pageant Ever by Barbara Robinson as a child? Since its publication in 1972, this beloved children's book classic has sold more than 7 million copies. While it had been many, many years since I had read the book myself and the details of the story were a bit fuzzy, I remembered loving this book as a child so I was thrilled to see that it was being made into a new film. Take a look:
About the Movie:
The Herdman kids are absolutely the worst. They lie, they steal, they bully…and they’ve hijacked the town Christmas pageant. Directed by Dallas Jenkins (“The Chosen”) and based on the international bestseller by Barbara Robinson, THE BEST CHRISTMAS PAGEANT EVER follows six siblings who sneak into church searching for snacks and walk away with the lead roles in the town pageant. Grace (Judy Greer) is directing the performance for the very first time; she and her daughter Beth (Molly Belle Wright) and husband Bob (Pete Holmes) are less than amused. But the play’s mischievous stars might unwittingly teach a community the true meaning of Christmas. Featuring Lauren Graham. Screenplay by Ryan Swanson and Platte F. Clark & Darin McDaniel.
Oh my goodness, what a fantastic movie this was! This honestly might be one of the best Christmas movies I have watched in a long time. First and foremost, it's absolutely hilarious. The Herdman kids are a little wild and certainly keep things very entertaining... but it also has a beautiful reminder of why we as Christians celebrate Christmas... and a reminder that the church should be welcoming to ALL people, even those- especially those- who don't seem like the perfect church goers. This film had me laughing out loud one minute and reaching for tissues for the next. Seeing the Christmas story through the eyes of children who were learning it for the very first time? Yeah, there is something pretty powerful in that. My 11-year-old daughter and I watched this together and we both loved it just as equally. As I said, it'd been many years since I'd personally read the book, but my daughter had finished reading it just a few weeks prior to watching the movie and felt it kept pretty true to that story... and was every bit as wonderful. If you are looking for a great movie to watch with your family this holiday season, you absolutely will NOT want to miss this one!
