Their secrets protect them... but secrets are hard to keep.

No one in the army can find out that Captain Jesse Christensen has become a believer. He and bookstore owner Meryn O’Reilly are forced to meet in secret, facing imprisonment—or worse—if they are found together.

As their relationship deepens, so does Lieutenant Gallagher’s hatred for the Christians in their city, putting all believers, especially Jesse, in extreme danger.

Meryn wants to give her heart to Jesse fully, but her past holds her back. Although circumstances conspire to keep her silent, she needs to tell him her secret so nothing will stand between them anymore.

But when he finds out what she has been keeping from him, nothing will ever be the same.

Interview – Captain Jesse Christensen from The Darkness Deepens by Sara Davison

Interviewer: Captain Jesse Christensen, welcome to the blog today. I appreciate your willingness to speak to me.

Jesse: I’m happy to talk to you, although it will have to be off the record since I would certainly be kicked out of the military if they discovered I had become a believer. And that might be the best I could hope for. As I’m sure you know, the government recently revised Section 47 (1) of the Canadian Criminal code and faith-based crimes such as owning a Bible or proselytizing are now considered treasonable offenses. If anyone knew I had secretly become a believer and was actively helping the Christians in our city, it’s not inconceivable that Lieutenant Gallagher, who hates me and who has the ear of General Faraj, the head of the military in Canada, could secure a death sentence for me.

Interviewer: Whew. Okay. This will just be between you and me then, at least until things quiet down and it’s safe for you to publicly live out your faith.

Jesse: Not gonna lie, that’s unlikely to happen. Things are a mess. Not only here but all around the world. There are famines and wars and plagues everywhere. There’s a global shortage of food, water, and oil. My closest friends and Meryn, the woman I love, are believers, like I am. That means they have a curfew, it is difficult for them to buy and sell things, and they never know if or when they could be arrested.

Interviewer: So, you’re all afraid, then, and living in hiding so you can stay safe?

Jesse: What? No. The exact opposite. As Meryn, the love of my life, once said, “These times aren’t about being safe. They’re about doing the right thing. Doing what we are called and compelled to do, whether or not it’s dangerous. Persevering to the end, no matter what we face along the way.

Interviewer: Still, you must be scared.

Jesse: I mean, we’re human, so of course we wrestle with fear. It’s a constant battle for me not to be consumed with worry for the people I care about, especially Meryn and her niece and nephew who are so young and innocent and vulnerable.

Interviewer: I can imagine. How do you win that battle?

Jesse: By constantly reminding myself that, as crazy and scary and out of control as the world seems, nothing is out of God’s control. He is still good and sovereign and on his throne. As Meryn once told me, “This is the way he planned it, long before I was born, before even the creation of the world. He decided I would be here, in this time, in this place, for a purpose. All of this—you, me, everything that’s happening out there—is unfolding exactly according to plan. I know it’s crazy and scary, but it’s also incredibly exciting. This is God, pulling out all the stops. Time is running out, and he will no longer be ignored.

Interviewer: That sounds like good advice for all of us, given the state of the world these days.

Jesse: Exactly.

Interviewer: Well, thanks so much for being willing to take a risk and speak to me today. I’ll be praying for the safety of you and all those you care about.

Jesse: I appreciate it. I’m praying for all believers as well, that we will not live in fear or despair, but that we will be filled with hope, joy, and peace as we remember that God is in control, He is with us always, and we know how the story ends.
