Kendy Pearson is a veteran high school teacher and an accomplished musician. She is also a worship leader, Bluegrass fiddler, and Civil War reenactment enthusiast. The quote on my website from Rudyard Kipling of The Jungle Book fame and much more is dear to my heart. It reads, “If history were taught in the form of stories, it would never be forgotten.” As a former high school history teacher, I dearly loved engaging in story to teach my students. If you want to engage a teenager, you can do one of two things: make a fool of yourself or tell a story. I am not saying I never did both, but the story bit was most effective for my purposes.
Do you remember having story books read to you as a child? Perhaps sitting on your parent’s lap in those early years, a love of story was born within you. And then came grade school. How I loved story time! I remember it even during kindergarten when nap time followed close behind. We would lie on our rugs or mats and fall sound asleep until the teacher woke us for recess. Ah, what productive days. Stories and naps. Sounds good to me even now.
Later in school, although I could read perfectly well, there was something magical about the teacher reading stories to the students. We were held captive somehow, enthralled by the way our own imagination kicked in to provide the visual to complete the story’s full effect.
Oral history has been around thousands of years longer than written history. When compared to the time man has inhabited the earth, a type of available, organized education is still considered fairly new. Add to that the invention of the printing press, and you see clearly why history taught in the form of story perseveres beyond history taught in classrooms. Have you ever wondered why diverse cultures all have similar stories about a world-wide flood?
Now that you know I love story, when you read my books, you will understand a bit more. This history teacher-turned author basks in the research. And I love to weave a story through authentic, documented events in order to immerse the reader in history. Fiction reading is for escape and entertainment. Whey not escape to a different century, a different culture?
I will always remember reading and watching the Little House series. I was Laura, but I often wanted to be Mary. I was Ann of Green Gables. I was Jo of Little Women. Oh, how my imagination would take flight. My day-dreaming days during long car vacations fed my creativity. And now I get to tumble all that together and write novels—Novels for grown-ups with two purposes: To catapult them back in time and experience history through the eyes of my character. And secondly, to help them understand how even in difficult, heart-wrenching, real-life experiences, people are not so different from the reader. They still need God’s guidance and the faith He willingly gives to those who seek it.
