Author Guest Post 

When I first started brainstorming Where I Found You, I couldn’t shake the idea of “follow the clues.” I’ve always loved movies that include tropes of wacky conditions from someone’s will—where the character has to get married by a certain date in order to receive the inheritance, or something else really unexpected that provided a lot of conflict. I thought “why not a treasure hunt?”  

 

And then the idea snowballed from there. “Why not a treasure hunt from beyond the grave?” “Why not a treasure hunt with a partner where you each only get some of the clues?” “Why not a treasure hunt where the partner is your sworn enemy?” And then the kicker…  

 

“WHY NOT A TREASURE HUNT WHERE THE PARTNER IS YOUR SWORN ENEMY OF WHICH YOU HAVE A ROMANTIC HISTORY WITH?” hehehe. (we authors do love to torture our characters!) 

 

That’s when the story really began to take shape, along with Noah and Elisa’s relationship and history. I talked to my dad, when this book was not a single ink stain on a piece of paper yet, and gave him a heads up. “Hey, if I get this book idea I have contracted, I’m going to need you to help me write the clues.” I knew that would be right up his ally. And I was right! 

 

A little over one year later, I sat in my parents’ sunroom, coffee in one hand, notebook and pen in the other, and plotted the theme and each clue with my father. We had the best time, laughing and interrupting each other with constant “OH! WHAT IF….” type declarations for hours, pulling a thesaurus out to help with the rhymes, crossing out and rewriting each location, until everything about the hunt felt just right.  

 

I’m so blessed that the book is published now and a permanent memory of that moment in time.
