Hail Mary Catch by Marie Veillon: Book Review

**ARC received for consideration. All opinions are my own.

The Book

For better or worse, in sickness and in health, as long as she keeps her crush in check…

After twenty-five years of depending on her family, Daisy LaFleur is determined to prove she’s a capable adult, epilepsy be d***ed. But when she moves out and accepts a temporary teaching job, reality sinks in—she’s alone, hours from home, and unable to drive or secure the medications she so desperately needs.

Then, in walks Dr. Landry Reed—her brother’s former roommate and Camellia’s resident grump. Despite his cynical outlook on love, Landry can’t resist helping a damsel in distress. So Daisy proposes a trade: a spare bedroom in exchange for his taxi services, last name, and health insurance—so long as they both shall live together (platonically, of course).

Landry doubts his tolerance for Daisy’s bright disposition until she begins filling the cracks in his rough exterior. And once she helps him overcome his pessimistic nature, he finds himself thinking of her as his wife instead of his best friend’s little sister.

Now Landry’s one-knee deep in marital debt, while Daisy’s relying on a Hail Mary to get him to acknowledge what’s right in front of him.

Hail Mary Catch is the third minty romance in Marie Veillon's Camellia Rom-Com Series. This novel also incorporates Cajun and Catholic themes.

The Author

A former high school lit teacher from South Louisiana, Marie Veillon is still learning to balance her ridiculous accent, Cajun-French—inspired vocabulary, and horrible speaking syntax with writing humorous stories and creating characters and situations relatable enough to make readers forget they aren’t real. She enjoys reading books about her Catholic faith and rom-coms with a guaranteed HEA, watching football, cooking, online shopping, fangirling, traveling, and spending time with her amazing family.

Book Review

Hail Mary Catch is the third book in the Camellia Rom-Com series. Personally, I had not read the previous two books and found that I was still able to enjoy this one as a standalone. That said, there were a lot of characters to keep track of and some complicated relationship dynamics that I think I would have understood and appreciated even more had I read the previous books. (I believe there are some spoilers for those in this one as well.)

Marriage of convenience + older brother's best friend? Yes, please... two of my favorite tropes came together in this story and I absolutely couldn't wait to dive in. I loved Daisy right from the start, but I'll be honest, it took me a little bit longer to come around to Landry- he certainly doesn't come across as the nicest guy in the beginning... something he is very much aware of too. Still, as the story went on and we got to know him better and understand why he comes across that way... well, I couldn't help but love him by the end. Not only that, but I also actually saw a lot of myself in his character as well. I loved the chemistry between these two and how they brought out different sides to each other throughout the story. There were definitely some moments that had me wanting to shake some sense into them, but I was 100% emotionally invested right through to the end. The epilepsy and neurodivergent representation in this book only made me appreciate it all that much more.

Hail Mary Catch is a closed-door romance--- or what the author describes as minty (PG-13 equivalent), which seems to fit it well. While nothing happens on the pages, there is definitely a good amount of innuendo and talk of sex and waiting for marriage, etc. and as such, it going to be more than some closed-door readers are comfortable with. There is also quite a bit of moderate language (no f-word). While this book is NOT a Christian romance (see content), many of the characters are Catholic and as such there are a lot of Catholic themes/traditions that played a big part in the story as well.
