Book Excerpt
We see God reaching for His children again and again—healing, sustaining, and rescuing.
In Genesis we not only witness God as the all-powerful Creator, but discover we are the beloved in the world’s greatest love story.
Genesis 1: In the Beginning God
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
Genesis 1:1
The Bible’s opening statement tells us that the universe and everything in it exists as a result of God’s purpose and creative energy. Psalm 19:1 says, “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows his handiwork.” Everything we see in the world around us bears evidence of an involved Creator. In the creation story we read of light, water, abundance, and fruitfulness. These symbols of life are woven throughout the Old Testament and are repeated in the New Testament as Jesus proclaims Himself to be the light of the world, the living water, the bread of life, the vine, and the source of life.
In Genesis we sense God’s care, joy, and delight in His creation as He pronounces His work “good.” This perspective of life as good is one that will be tested as the story unfolds.
