More from Susan
Thank you so much for being part of this incredible journey. I am grateful for your support in helping to share my debut book!
I’m thrilled to introduce readers to more than just a novel—this is a journey into God’s love and mercy, reaching even the darkest places. Rooted in scripture, infused with traces of Jewish folklore, and written with the utmost respect for Jesus, 63 Hours in Hell examines themes of faith, forgiveness, redemption, and the healing of broken relationships.
If you’re a fan of The Chosen series, this book will resonate with you. It imagines what happened during Jesus’ three days in the depths of hell. The story follows a jilted bride, her brother, and the good thief on a quest: finding key fragments, freeing hell’s prisoners, fighting the devil, and facing their own inner demons.
A Special Message
Readers have shared how they found a personal message within its pages—something they needed to hear at just the right moment. I pray 63 Hours in Hell offers encouragement to you as well.
An Inspired Journey
As you can see in the photo, my furry companions have been a steady source of joy throughout my writing journey. (Fun fact: my majestic, wolf-like dog even inspired the demon dog in the book!)
An Invitation
I didn’t truly discover Jesus until later in life, which makes me even more in awe of His boundless love, sacrifice, and resurrection—and His patience throughout my personal transformation. This book is more than a story; it’s an invitation to understand why Jesus’ death and resurrection remain pivotal—yesterday, today, and forever.
Thank you for joining me on this journey and for sharing this book with others. Your support means the world to me!
Happy reading,
Susan L. Davis
Author Interview
What is the greatest advice you have ever been given about writing?
The greatest advice I’ve ever been given about writing is this: “Show, don’t tell.” Instead of stating emotions or facts, reveal them through actions, dialogue, and body language. For example, rather than saying, “She was nervous,” you could write, “Her hands trembled as she smoothed her dress for the third time, her gaze darting toward the clock.”
This technique makes your writing richer and more immersive, allowing readers to feel and experience the story alongside your characters. It’s not just advice—it’s the key to crafting emotionally engaging writing.
What inspired you to write this book?
The idea for 63 Hours in Hell came when I first opened a Bible in my 40s. Its mysteries—Jesus descending into hell, the Nephilim, and Mary being told not to touch Jesus—fueled my desire to write.
The confirmation came on a hard day. After a long school orientation with my special-needs son, I faced a flat tire. At the shop, a stranger said, “Why are you anxious? Don’t you know God loves you?” Moments later, the mechanic said, “a broken key caused your flat tire.”
I couldn’t ignore the irony—I was writing about the key to Hell. It wasn’t coincidence; it was a confirmation for me to write this story. Writing this book grew my faith and reminded me that God meets us when we step out.
What’s something surprising you discovered during your research?
One of the most surprising things I discovered while researching 63 Hours in Hell came from the story of David and Goliath. Most people know the famous battle where David slew the giant, but what intrigued me was what happened after.
Think about it—David didn’t simply leave the battlefield victorious. He cut off Goliath’s head and carried it more than twenty miles, through enemy territory, all the way to Jerusalem.
Here’s where it gets even more fascinating: many believe David buried Goliath’s skull at Golgotha—the very site where some scholars believe Jesus was later crucified. Imagine the scene: Jesus on the cross, and beneath His feet, buried in the dirt, lies Goliath’s skull. It’s a stunning picture of God’s plan unfolding—David’s victory brought physical deliverance to Israel, while Jesus’ victory at that same location brought spiritual victory for all of humanity, defeating sin and Satan.
And then there’s the name itself—Golgotha, meaning “The Place of the Skull.” Throughout history, there’s been speculation about this name. Does it refer to the land’s shape, the executions that happened there, or perhaps Goliath’s skull buried beneath? Who knows?
I’ve heard it said, “If you dig deep enough, you’ll find Jesus on every page of the Old Testament.” That idea stayed with me throughout the writing process for 63 Hours in Hell. It shaped so much of what I wanted this story to explore, shedding light on how God’s redemptive plan is beautifully woven across scripture in ways we may not always realize.
What do you hope readers will take away from the book?
I hope readers experience the power of Christ’s resurrection in a deeply personal way. 63 Hours in Hell meets you where you are, offering a unique takeaway for everyone—whether it’s hope, renewed strength, a deeper purpose, or the courage to keep going.
Above all, my prayer is that this book draws you closer to Jesus, His sacrifice on the cross, and God’s overwhelming love for you.
