“Stories should have happy endings,” Clara said.

“But Dame Gothel is a mean old woman!” Eliza proclaimed at the end of the story. “I’m happy the prince found Rapunzel and her babies, and they lived happily ever after. Are you having a baby Fraulein Clara? Is Max your prince?” Eliza asked.

“Why do you ask, precious Kinder?”

“Your tummy is really big, and I heard Herr Max say you are a happy little family.”

“Ah, he did. He’s not my prince, though.” Clara pressed her palms together and placed them next to her ear like a pillow. “You sleep soundly, and dream about your prince. Every little girl should dream of the one who will come for her one day.”
