“I don’t have much patience for cat and mouse, Miss Weston, so let me be blunt. Is someone threatening you?”

Spring felt the blood drain from her face and turned her head away with the foolish hope he wouldn’t see. Why did he have to ask such direct questions? She didn’t want to lie.

“I know whoever it is has probably told you that something bad will happen if you cooperate with the police. But I can make sure that won’t happen. I can protect you.”

The phone vibrated again.

She closed her eyes, the device heavy in her hand. The memory of the pain two nights ago pierced through her.

The texter had promised worse. She didn’t want to find out what that was.

“It’s not your job to protect me, Sergeant.” She met his gaze in time to see his green eyes cool. “I can’t help you with the case. I’ve told you all I can.”
